Blog 27: Senior Project Reflection

1. Positive Statement: I am most proud of my activities, I felt that the class really enjoyed the activities and they got to use what I had taught them.
2. Questions to Consider:
a. 2-hour: P, because I felt that I followed the contract and that I went above and beyond in every different part of the presentation requirements.
b. Senior Project:  P, I turned everything on time, and I would put forth my best effort in all of the project component.
3. What worked for you in your senior project? I feel that my service learning really did help me in my senior project, as that is where I got a majority of the answers for my essential question.
4. What didn't work for you in your senior project? The part that didnt work for me in my senior project is that I wish I joined service learning earlier so that I could of gotten more out of my time at CAP.
5. Finding Value: Well with my product of seeing the value of an essential question, I really feel that it can help me throughout life. From now on, in anything that I do, I will set a goal to help me stay focused and motivated. I'm also more competitive from participating in science fair, and I see how competition is everywhere from college admissions to job applications.

Blog 25: Service Learning

    Literal
·       The link to my log of hours is on the left tab
·     Sent contact information in email
    Interpretive
I have gained a lot from my service learning at the CAP (Civil Air Patrol) cadet program. All of my answers came from my service learning and materials(Learn to Lead book) that I have received from the CAP cadet program.
   Applied
My service learning at CAP has been a great help to my essental question, because it was how a CAP cadet can be successful. Being that my essential question is directly related to my service learning, it was evident that my service learning was one of my most important source in finding my answers.

Blog 24: Independent Component 2

Literal
(a) Statement saying: “I, Melissa Araiza, affirm that I completed my independent component which represents 30 hours of work.”
(b) In this independent component I worked on Civil Air Patrol Test that I receive a certificate of competition. It varied from Civil Air Patrol Safety Education, to Civil Air Patrol Aeronautical Education, and Operational Resource Management System.
Interpretive
This shows thirty hours of work because I would have to study the given material so that I can take the given test. I have been able to complete all of the given safety education test. Also I have complete the first Aeronautical Education Test to complete the Gen J F Curry Achievement/Award one of the many on the way to promotion. Below is the calendar of which I took the test and some of the certificate of competition that I have earned, I also included all of the Safety Education course that I have passed.
Jan-Apr which shows 31 hrs

Applied
This has helped me with my essential question, "What is most essential in being successful in the cadet program at Civil Air Patrol?" because its needed for a cadet to part take in. In the cadet program in order to move up to the first promotion you need to pass the first Aeronautical Education Test. Also in CAP you need to have knowledge of what to do in emergency situations, that is why it is important to take the Safety Education tests.

Blog 23: Helping 2013

Interviewee: Oliva Pinedo
Day and time of interview: Friday 4/20/2012 at 1 p.m.

(1) What ideas do you have for your senior project and why?
  • their answer: "I was planning on doing it on physical therapy since I volunteer at a physical therapy place."
  • What feedback did you offer when you heard the topic ideas? "I would recommend that you also have a backup plan just in case you loose interest in physical therapy or something goes wrong with your service learning."
(2) What do you plan to do to complete the 10 hours of service learning (working with an expert) which is due prior to senior year starting?  Note: They also have to complete the 50 hours during the school year.
  • their answer: "Since I'am volunteering already at a physical therapy place, I am trying to get into a volunteer program at Casa Colina at the rehabilitation center. So what I need to do is get three recommendations letters that I already have asked for, one from a physical therapist who has their P.H.D and from two teachers at iPoly and that will help me get into the program. I would be volunteering for the rest of the summer and for that program we have to be committed to six-months and work for at least one-hundred hours."
  • What feedback did you offer them in response? "Just remember that the hours that you earn in the summer do not count towards the fifty hours you need durning the school year."
(3) What do you hope to see or expect to see when watching the class of 2012 present their two hour presentations?
  • their answer: "Im hoping that I can see someone who is presenting something similar to my topic so I can see what they had to do, what activities they did, how they planned everything, what they went over, how they used the information in their presentation, and just how well they put out their information."
  • What suggestions did give them regarding how they should approach watching the 2 hour presentations?  "For yours you should divide it into answers, that is what the teachers will tell you to do, so you come up with with a minimum of three answers, but you would want a lot more to show that you been working on your project all year long. Also you answers should be specific so it should be not training daily it should be training using blank methods and this long, and also when you present you should do answer then activity, answer then activity and so on.
(4) What questions do they have about senior project?  What additional recommendations would you give the 2013 student about senior project?  Be specific and note what you told them.
  • questions they had: 1. question "Will you know how much time you have while you present and is it a complete two hours of talking time?" 1. answer "No you dont have to be talking for the complete two hours, you just need at least thirty minutes of talking time and that is just content base not including the activities, foundation, sponge activity, or conclusion. Also the teacher you are presenting to will generally let you know how much time you have been presenting for. 2. question"Is it a continuous thirty minutes? 2. answer "No it can be broken up according to your answer so answer one two and three all have say 15 min talking time and the activities between them are 15 minutes each." 3. question "Do you need so many activities?" 3. answer "No you don't you can do as many as you like you could have one activity that incorporates all of your answers if you like." 4. question "What if you dont meet that thirty minutes of talking time will you know if you pass or fail?" 4. answer: "Yes, the teacher you are presenting to will let you know that you didn't meet the required time and you will have to make it up."
  • What additional recommendations did you give them? "I would recommend that you stay on top of your service learning, independent components, and research checks by keeping a calendar and a log to show as evidence that you have been working on your senior project. Also you should start collecting research now on your topic so that you can easily reach the required minimum articles at the end of senior year. Another thing is don't put off the science project, it will be better if you start durning winter break and ask questions before because it can be difficult to do after winter break. Stay on top of your blog so that it is constantly organized and everything is easy to find."

Blog 22: Answer #3

Essential question: Whatis most essential In being successful in the Cadet program at Civil Air Patrol?
Answer 3: The Cadet Oath is a cadet's commitment to the Civil Air Patrol Cadet Program and if followed can determine a cadet's success.
Evidence: 1. My learn to lead book refers to the CAP Cadet Oath as a promise that puts your personal honor and reputation on the line.
2. The Cadet Oath refers to very important parts of being a CAP cadet such as attending the weekly meetings, obeying the officers, and wearing the uniform properly. This is what is looked at as a cadet wants to promote.
3. In Service learning we recite the cadet oath to the officers to show them a cadet is committed to CAP.
Sources: 1. My learn to lead book states the cadet oath and defined it.
2. My service learning is the Cadet Oath at work, since all main points of the Cadet Oath being done weekly.
3.Interview with Lt. Col. Hartwell, he explained how one factor of the Cadet Oath is especially important to them is areospace education.

Blog 20: Room Creativity

(1) How do you plan to address the room creativity expectation?
I plan on addressing the room creativity expectation by covering the walls with either black, blue, camouflage. Then asking my if squadron if I can borrow the CAP flags. I Also would want to display my certificates from my second independent component. I would want the tables in groups so that they can work in teams for my activities.
(2) What activity ideas do you ha
ve for answer 1 or 2?
For answer one I could have the students perform drill, like my 20 min presentation and have it be a team effort. For answer two I would give the students a paper with different situations that best show the CAP Core Values.

Research Check 14

The cadet NCO and The Team

Professionalism: in everyday terms is a professional who is someone who gets paid for their work
In CAP a professional is
-have a habit of putting their community interest above their own
-have special skill (knowledge or experience)
-hold themselves and their peers to an ethical code (respect moral principals)
Standards:"The leader's example is the most important standard of all."
-a standard is an established requirement, a principal which a standard can be judged.
-it is vital that a leader set clear standards and communicate them to the team.
-the leader's example is the most important standard of them all.
-standards are not always "black and white" it can vary on the situation
The Non-Commissioned Officer:
-Air Force non-commissioned officers epitomize the Core Values.
-The transition from airman to sergeant can be difficult. It involves one who was cared for to now caring for others and from one who was taught to one who teaches.
-Rank does not confer privilege or power but gives respondibility.
Respondibility and the NCO:
-Must show the core values.
-Neeed to be able to guide, instruct, and mentor by sharing their experiences and knowledge.
-Must support the their own leaders
-Reward those that you closely work with to point them out as role models.
-Correct people so that they can learn the correct way.
-Career council cadets to show them what can be possible in the Air Force or CAP.
-Keeep learning both at CAP and accademically.

Blog 19: Answer Two

  • EQ: What is most essential in being successful in the Civil Air Patrol Cadet Program?
  • Answer 2: As a cadet in Civil Air Patrol you are expected to have the qualities that is the CAP Core Values. This includes Integrity, Volunteer Service, Excellence in All We Do, and Respect.
  • Evidence: The CAP Core Value of Integrity is show as taking responsibility and don't blame someone or take credit for their work. Volunteer service is the act of selfness, its like when a higher ranked cadet mentor and train a new cadet. Excellence in All We Do, is giving your best effort no matter the challenge, this is like when performing physical fitness and pushing yourself to do more. Lastly, Respect, this is evident in the relationship between sergeant and cadet.
  • Source: My first piece of evidence is Sgt. Gardner, the second is service learning, and lastly my Lear To Lead booklet.

Blog 18: The Product

As of March, my product is that I know how to act in different environments.
Evidence:
My service learning- When I go to service learning I wear a uniform, perform drills, and act militaristic.  I  give respect to the squadron leaders, take off my hat when I enter a room, and salute to officers. I also before every time I wear my uniform that boots are shined, uniform is ironed properly, and have no loose strings on my uniform.  Service Learning

My 20 min Presentation- For my 20 min i presented on drills. I kept it professional by wearing my Civil Air Patrol Uniform and showing the class how to perform drills by showing them by example. I would repeat each step so that the class could see each step, this I would only do to teach the students.

Science Fair- For science fair I had to stay professional, out of respect for the judges. Also I had to be able to explain my science experiment using the terminology that is appropriate. My evidence would be getting almost perfect scores from the judges durning science fair.

Overall, Each example above is how I act differently in each situation. When I go to a CAP metting Im professional, 20 min presentation Im professional and instructor, and lastly science fair I was professional and knowledgable for my project.

Blog 15: Independent Component 1

Evidence:

Link to my calendar: Oct-Jan
Literal:
a)    I, Melissa Araiza, affirm that I completed my independent component, which represents 30 hours of work.
b)   In the past couple of months I have been working on my independent component, which is keeping a log of my physical activity. I have been able to bring down my mile time to 8 minutes and have been able to do about one third more push-up than before. In attempting the sit and reach something that I was never really good at have improved tremendously. I also, have been using my work out machine to increase my strength partially in my arms and leg muscles. I plan on trying to exercise on a regular basis but probably less due to my busy schedule.

Interpretive:

My individual component will be very helpful to me in both my service learning and my own health. I will continue to stay physically active because it’s something that will be beneficial to me in years to come. I have noticed that when I go and do physical activities I feel less stressed and wanting to do it again. It demonstrates 30 hours of work because simply I had 3 months to do exercise and when its spread out over time it was easy to accomplish.

Applied:

In bring what I did in my independent component; it has helped me with my essential question, “What is most essential in being successful in the cadet program at Civil Air Patrol.” By being physically active it has helped me when we have a “PT” or physical testing night allow me to keep up with the other cadets. During these PT nights we would run the mile, do sit and reach, push-ups, curl-ups, and short distance runs. In my log of my physical fitness I would do all of these exercises so that when my next PT night approaches I will be at my best. I know that being physically active can help especially for promotion. I also see how stretching before exercising can greatly help so that I don’t strain a muscle. Lastly, I see how when we have PT nights how all the cadets will encourage one another to try their hardest, I think this means the most because it is teamwork at it’s best.

Blog 13: Answer One

(1) What is answer 1 to your EQ? Be specific in your answer and write it like a thesis statement.
My first answer to my essential question is, "A cadet must be able to excel in their own personal leadership."
(2) What possible evidence do you have to support this answer?

The first piece of evidence is the uniform. A cadet must take their uniform seriously, by this, a cadet is taking care of their uniform is a tool for self-discipline, personal responsibility, and self-respect. The second piece of evidence is drills and commands, with this it shows the self-discipline a cadet has showing their personal leadership. The third piece of evidence is showing respect to those in command, as you give respect to others it improves your own personal leadership.
(3) What source(s) did you find this evidence and/or answer?
Lafond, Curt. "Character and The Air Force Tradition." Learn To Lead. Ed. Neil Probst. Second ed. Vol. One. Civil Air Patrol Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala., 2011. Print. Personal Leadership.
